In October, Marie-Laure and I took a trip to Geneva, Switzerland.

Having visited Switzerland before I was not so impressed, so was hoping to leave with a different perception. I had a much better experience this time around, and found Geneva to be very beautiful with the river splitting the city and views of Mont Blanc standing in the city’s backdrop.

It was very cold when we were here , so we tried to do as much exploring and photo taking as we would have liked. Walking around the city, we noticed many English speakers, but that makes sense as it is a very international city. Geneva is on the side closest to France, so expect French to be spoken rather than German.

During the day, we tried to find somewhere to eat at a reasonable price, so pre-warning for anyone wanting to visit Switzerland, it’s very expensive – but this is no secret. We couldn’t find anything open, or of a reasonable price and despite our best attempts we couldn’t find anything light and affordable… we settled on a McDonalds, which is very unlike us. However on the night, we ate a wonderful fondue! My first time trying this, and it was delicious. It was a tiny restaurant in a dark street, but inside was so cool. There were so many famous pictures on the walls, with a cheese twist – Mona Lisa enjoying a fondue. It felt like a small community in this restaurant and it was cool to experience the Swiss life.

The next time we visit Switzerland, we would love to visit Zurich, but also see some of the beautiful lakes this country has. This is definitely next on our Swiss bucket list! Overall, we would recommend you visit, just make sure you have saved up.

To summarize, Geneva is:

  • Nice but not much to do,
  • Expensive, but you have to try at least a fondue,
  • Good to visit in summer as well as in winter, it’s quite nice with the snow on the mountains.
